A daily newspaper is a publication that contains news articles. Typically, the paper includes national and international news; local news; sports; entertainment/amusements; classified ads; and editorials, which express the opinion of the editor(s) on an issue.
Some newspapers are geared towards a specific audience, such as the business community or the residents of a small town. Others are more general and may focus on such topics as crime, the weather, health and medicine, politics and government, science and technology, food, clothing, and home fashions.
Most modern newspapers are divided into sections devoted to the major topics. Typical sections are: the front page, headlines (including breaking news and feature stories); national/international news; local news; sports; entertainment/amusements; and classified ads. Most also have an editorial page and a section for columnists’ opinions called “op-eds” that express the views of individual writers.
The newspaper is printed on large sheets of newsprint and folded before distribution. It is typically printed in black ink, but some use color to highlight important events or information. Newspapers are available for free or at a reduced price, and many people read them daily to keep abreast of current events.
Newspapers are aimed at a wide audience, and they cover the full range of topics of interest to most readers. However, there are also specialized newspapers that serve groups of readers such as immigrants, business people, sports enthusiasts, or the gay community within a city or region.
The Yale Daily News is the nation’s oldest college newspaper, published Monday through Friday during the academic year at Yale University. It is financially and editorially independent. The paper reflects the perspectives of students, alumni, and members of the community, including diverse viewpoints from across the political spectrum. The News is committed to fairness and accuracy. The News publishes a number of special issues throughout the academic year, including its annual Commencement and First Year Issues. In addition, the News publishes a weekly newsmagazine and special issues that celebrate Yale’s African American, Latinx, and Asian American communities in partnership with their affiliated student groups. The News is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the New England Press Association. In 2017 the Daily News was purchased by Tronc, a company owned by Mortimer B. Zuckerman. Today the newspaper has an approximate circulation of 2.4 million copies a day. It is not related to the earlier New York Daily News of the 19th century, which closed in 1906. The paper is currently the eleventh highest-circulation newspaper in the United States. Its slogan is “All the News That’s Fit to Print.” The Daily News became known for its sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and comics. It was also the first successful tabloid in the United States. The current paper, founded in 1919, continues to appeal to its loyal readership with an agenda that focuses on high-profile city news, celebrities, and sports. It is a competitor of the more respectable rival, the New York Post.
